Flow Direction of Globe Valves
Globe valves are unidirectional, that is to say the flow direction is restricted.
According to API 623 standard, the globe valve is designed as flow to open with the aim of flow resistance reducing and labor-saving when opening the valve. When the valve is closed, the gasket between valve body and bonnet and packing around the stem are not subjected to force, which prevents them from being affected by medium pressure and temperature for a long time, prolonging the service life and reducing the probability of leakage. In addition, packing can be replaced or added in closed state, which is easy for maintenance.
In general, the globe valve is flow to open. But on the basis of BS 1873 standard, there are also some special circumstances that require flow to close.
A.High pressure globe valve with large diameter
Due to poor sealing performance of large diameter valves, this design can make the medium pressure act on the disc when the valve is closed, which improves sealing performance. If adopts flow to open design, the valve is difficult to close and the stem is prone to bending and deformation.
B.Two globe valves connected in series on the bypass pipeline; the second one requires flow to close
To ensure the tightness of the valve within a maintenance cycle, valves that frequently open and close need to be equipped with two globe valves in series.
