Factors Affecting Gasket and Packing Sealing Performance

1.Surface condition:

The condition of the sealing surfaces is critical for achieving a proper seal. The shape and surface roughness of the sealing surface have a certain impact on the sealing performance. Surfaces should be clean, smooth, and free from any defects or damage. Irregularities or roughness can prevent the gasket or packing from making a tight seal.

2.Fluid compatibility:

The compatibility of the gasket or packing material with the fluid being sealed is crucial. Certain fluids can degrade or react with certain materials, leading to leakage or failure. It is important to consider the chemical compatibility of the materials when selecting gaskets and packings.

3.Fluid temperature:

The temperature affects the viscosity of the liquid, thereby affecting its sealing performance. As the temperature increases, the viscosity of the liquid decreases, that is, the viscosity of the gas increases. Additionally, temperature changes often cause deformation of sealing components, which is prone to leakage.

4.Material selection:

Soft materials, due to their tendency to deform as elasticity or plasticity generated under preloading, can block channels for fluid leakage, thus facilitating sealing. However, generally soft materials cannot withstand the action of high-pressure fluids. The corrosion resistance, heat resistance, density, and hydrophilicity of sealing materials all have a certain impact on sealing performance.

5.Sealing surface specific pressure:

Generally, a certain specific pressure is generated on the sealing surface by applying pre-tightening force, causing deformation of the sealing element to reduce or eliminate the gaps between the sealing contact surfaces and prevent fluid from passing through, thus achieving the purpose of sealing. It should be noted that the effect of fluid pressure will change the sealing surface specific pressure. Its increase is beneficial for sealing, but it is limited by the compressive strength of the sealing material. For dynamic seals, its increase will also cause a corresponding increase in frictional resistance.
